Birthday Cupcakes to Seniors at Cypress Senior Center
Birthdays Are Sweet at the Cypress Senior Center
When is your birthday? On the fourth Monday of your birthday month, if you are a Cypress resident and 60 years or older, you can get a FREE lunch including a cupcake at the Cypress Senior Center. This special deal is a part of their nutrition program for seniors.
Right at Home has been providing birthday cupcakes at the Cypress Senior Center for the last five years. How can cupcakes be part of a “nutrition” program at a senior center, you might ask? It’s all part of a plan to get seniors out of the house, engaged, and eating a nutritious meal!
Cypress Senior Center's Nutrition Program
The Cypress Senior Center's nutrition program encourages seniors to try out a free lunch for their birthday. If they like it, they can take advantage of the nutrition programs, which is a very reasonably priced lunch program, even when it is not their birthday. There are even FREE transportation options to get to the Cypress Senior Center by using either the Taxi Voucher Program or if you are on the Nutrition Transportation plan. What a deal! The center will provide the transportation (pick you up at your door) AND, get this….they only ask for a $3.00 donation, if you got it! This place is packed almost every day with seniors talking and breaking bread together. This is why Right at Home Northwest Orange County got involved as it truly fits our mission of "improving the lives of those we serve".
Teena Tomlinson, Recreation Specialist, states, "Some seniors come with family members or friends. However, as you get older, sometimes friends are not around and sometimes family is not available on your birthday." She goes on to say, "Most people who come, come alone. And so there is a good chance that this monthly birthday celebration at the Cypress Senior Center is their only celebration on their birthday."
Right at Home Supports Cypress Senior Center
Not only has Right at Home provided cupcakes for 5 years, we also have been providing one educational presentation a month each 3rd Monday of the month. Why does Right at Home spend so much time in senior centers? One of the first things we did, as a beginning owners, was visit local senior centers. Why senior centers? Because it fit into Grace (my wife and co-owner) and my vision of creating a Blue Zone environment in Cypress. We learned from the Blue Zone book that one thing that will help people live vibrant lives as long as possible, is to have a place they can connect with friends. Our ministry/business mission is to help people stay independent as long as possible.
As we continue our support at the Cypress Senior, we want to also acknowledge Joan Bardin and Teena Tomlinson. Joan retired last year and we miss her. Teena is working as hard as ever at the Senior Center and is just as passionate about helping improve seniors lives, now as she was when we first met her. We first met Joan right after we opened our doors. Joan helped us begin our presentation journey and Teena helped made us excited about the fabulous Birthdays at the Cypress Senior Center.
