“Because families are so involved in caregiving,” she explains, “providing them with respite is essential, allowing them to spend meaningful time with their loved ones.”

“Caregiving can sometimes take away from the grieving process,” says Sandi, “so having that final bonding time is crucial.” It’s also beneficial to have someone around who is familiar with the day-to-day challenges that are part of providing care and support to a loved one near the end of life.

“Experienced caregivers can notice physiological changes and help guide the family through the end-of-life process, which can be peaceful when handled well,” Sandi says. An experienced caregiver might suggest calling the chaplain, social worker, or nurse at the appropriate time.
