Your Career as a Caregiver

A Note about COVID-19

Now, more than ever, it’s clear how essential caregivers really are. The people we serve rely on our caregivers, not just for companionship during a time of isolation, but also for assistance with their basic needs. Without dedicated caregivers, many seniors and adults with disabilities would be left with little support. You can make all the difference.

When you become a caregiver, no day will ever be exactly the same as the last. No matter what type of caregiving you provide, you will always have a wide variety of duties and experiences.

And that’s important to us.

Caregivers are the heart of our organization. We know our company couldn’t exist without you, which is why it’s so important to us to keep your passion strong and to ensure your needs are met.

Frequently Asked Questions

One thing we can tell you for sure about working as a caregiver is that every day is different! The tasks you’ll perform will depend upon the needs of the clients you work with and your personal skill level, but some responsibilities include:

  • Assisting clients with toileting, bathing, and dressing
  • Working with clients to plan meals, preparing these, and cleaning up
  • Taking clients to doctor appointments, running errands, or visiting favorite places
  • Reminding clients to take their medications
  • Performing light housework, such as vacuuming or doing laundry
  • Offering companionship by spending time with your client and doing what they enjoy, such as playing cards, working on puzzles, watching sports, looking at family pictures, etc.

No! We prefer to hire individuals who have at least one year of experience as a caregiver, but certification is not required unless specifically stated. Our priority is to hire reliable, caring people who have a genuine passion for serving others to join our team. However, you can pursue additional credentials as part of our advancement and training program.

Shifts can be as short as 2-3 hours long, though some may last up to 12 hours depending on the client’s needs and care provided.

That’s okay! Most clients don’t need round-the-clock support, but we do provide support on a 24/7 basis. Let us know what your availability is, and we’ll create a schedule that works for you.  Please keep in mind, the more flexible you are, the quick we can fill up your schedule with hours!

We use a proprietary system to maintain electronic care logs for every client. With this system, you can document your activities with your client and log time and mileage – saving you a trip to the office to turn in your weekly reports!

Our compensation packages range from $13-15+/hour, which is very competitive in the Mid-Michigan area. Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) may earn more to start. We offer many opportunities to increase your hourly pay rate, with premiums for certain shifts and raises given for demonstrated reliability, merit, and completing training programs. We also pay on a weekly basis through direct deposit, so you don’t need to worry about coming to the Midland office to pick up your paycheck, especially if you live in one of the surrounding counties.

All employees receive a t-shirt with the Right at Home logo upon joining, but we don’t have a formal dress code. In fact, many of our clients prefer that their caregiver wear “regular” clothes – this helps them to feel more comfortable and avoid the sense of any stigma, especially when out in public.

Absolutely! In addition to Midland, we support clients living in Bay, Clare, Gladwin, Gratiot, Isabella, and Saginaw Counties, and have employees living throughout the Mid-Michigan area. Our priority is making the right caregiver/client matches, but we will do our best to pair you with clients in your area.

Right at Home – Northern Michigan includes employees in our mission statement, because they are critical to our success. We can’t provide clients with the support they deserve and need without a team of dedicated, reliable, compassionate caregivers. We’re dedicated to helping employees grow and advance in their careers with a formal training and advancement program, and offer a friendly, supportive work environment.

While many of the basic caregiver duties are the same, the major difference is that you will primarily be working with one client at a time (unless we are helping a couple) and working with that client in their home.  Most clients choose us because they want to continue living in their homes but need extra support.

However, we have some team members who support clients in independent living facilities, such as Swanhaven Manor in Saginaw. Caregivers help support clients who are making the transition to Swanhaven from their own homes or a rehab or hospital setting.

You Are the Right Fit

We believe that all kinds of people make great caregivers. It doesn’t matter if you have a little experience or a lot: You might already have the skills it takes to benefit a senior or adult with disabilities. Caregiving might be right for you if:

You’re a retiree or empty-nester
looking for meaningful part-time employment…

You’re new to the workforce and want to build
a successful career in health care…

You have experience caring
for a friend or loved one…

You’ve worked as a professional caregiver
for another company…

You’re working toward
becoming a CNA or RN…

You’re looking for
a more meaningful career…

Types of Caregiving

We’re proud to be able to offer elderly people and adults with disabilities a wide variety of care plans. Though some of our clients will need more advanced care, including administration of medicine or hygiene assistance, others are simply looking for help with their everyday routines or assistance in recuperating from a hospital stay. This means that no matter your current training or skill level, chances are we have a position for you.
